وصف الكتاب | Hesse wrote Demian in fiery prose at the height of his maturity. It is a small book, but small books are often the ones that have the richest dynamism. Hesse clearly realized that his work had a universal character. This is evidenced by the novel’s ambiguous subtitle: “A Tale of Youth.” Ambiguous because it could include a tale of youth in the individual sense, as well as a tale of a generation of youth. Hesse did not want the novel to be published under his own name, but chose to sign it with the pseudonym “Sinclair,” taken from the world of Hölderlin, and he did not sign it until its tenth edition. Demian was a novel that touched the nerve of the period with exciting precision, and depicted with a sense of knowledge the image of an entire youth who believed that from among its ranks had risen the hero in whom their deepest hopes were embodied. |
