The council was originally created in 1958 and has undergone several developments and changes over the past 50 years. It is a world leader in supporting international congresses and scientific meetings concerned with sport science and physical education; it is also an advocate for fair play and ethics in sport. It works directly through relationships with influential organisations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO); the United Nations Office of Sport for Development and Peace and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
