How does sucking occur in babies?
Babies learn to suck at the mother's breast, instinctively using a "wave-like" peristaltic tongue movement, pressing the nipple between their lower and upper palate to expel milk from the breast. In order for babies to learn and continue this movement, it is recommended not to give a bottle for the first 6 weeks unless it is necessary.
Babies suck on the breast in 3 steps:
Clutch:
Lips open outwards, the brown area of the breast is grasped.
Peristaltic tongue movement:
The baby's tongue makes a soft "wave-like" motion, pressing the nipple and causing the milk to come out. This movement promotes proper mouth and facial development. NOTE: During a breastfeeding period, the baby repeats this peristaltic movement 800 to 1000 times on average.
Swallowing:
The back of the tongue rises, directing the milk into the esophagus.
