A Contactor is a mechanical switching device having only one position of rest, operated otherwise than by hand, capable of making, carrying, and breaking currents under normal circuit conditions including overload conditions - it cannot break short-circuit currents. A contactor's applications include controlling electric motors, thermal evaporators, lighting, capacitor banks, heating, and other electrical loads. Contactors range in size and capacity.
