Book DescriptionThe design and construction of tall buildings has taken a global upswing, with the incomplete Burj Dubai already the world's tallest building and projects started or on the boards for the 150-story Chicago Spire; the 1,776-ft. Freedom Tower in New York City; and others for Moscow, Russia; Seoul, South Korea; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Once completed, these buildings will not only dominate their skylines but will also serve as symbols of success and economic power around the world. As the race to transform the world's skylines continues, the criteria for rating these buildings have also evolved. Today, the project teams for these buildings must minimize the building's? effect on the natural environment through proper site utilization, innovative uses of materials, energy reduction, use of alternative energy sources, and reduced emissions and water consumption. The official guide to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2008 award winning tall building projects, Best Tall Buildings 2008 provides owner/developers, architects, landscape architects, contractors, and structural engineers with a unique look into the latest developments in all areas tall buildings rating and awards criteria. Editorial ReviewThe purpose is to bring together knowledge from a variety of scientific fields that should help people arrive at an informed judgment about animal suffering and to recognize when it is present in a given situation in a given animal species. The book does not present moral views but instead attempts to help readers in their thinking rather than telling them what to think. Such an objective is indeed a worthy one for all of us who have animal contact or care about the animal kingdom. This book meets its objectives extremely well, especially its goal of providing an objective reference for recognizing and understanding animal suffering rather than solely relying on subjective criteria.
