US Standard Size Joint Will Fit into European Standard Size Joint:
Standard Taper Ground Glass Joints are interchangable.For either frosted, presicon-ground standard taper joints (same size),the inner ground surfaces (male joint) make a good seal with the outer(female joint)). The joint size is described by the form A/B. The first number A represents the outer diameter (OD) in millimeters (mm) at the widest point of the inner (male) joint and the second number B represents the length of the joint. For example, a 14/20 joint is 14 mm wide at the top (the widest part) and is 20 mm in longth. The joint has a standard taper 1:10, any two joints (male and female) with the same outside diameter (A)can fit into each other ,no matther how lenght the joints are. For example, a 24/40 (US standard size) joint on a condenser will fit into a 24/29 (European standard size)flask but the ground glass joint will protrude (40 - 29) 11mm into the flask.
A 3 way distilling adapter ,also called 3 way connecting adapter,distilling head,is designed with three joints: one female joint at top which is designed to hold a thermometer adapter accommodating thermometer to monitor the vapor temperature during the distillation,and two male joints,one at the side arm to connect a liebig condenser or coiled condenser and one at the bottom to connect a distillation flask(round bottom flask) or a distillation column(vigreux column or hemple column).
This three way connecting adapter is commonly used in the distillation apparatus for distillation,vacuum distillation,fractional distillation,it is quite similar to three thermometer adapter HMA016103,but the top outer joint is replaced by a thermometer inlet cap. This distillation adapter is with 24/40 standard female taper joint at top,and one 24/40 male joint at side arm and one 24/40 male joint at bottom.
The Claisen adapter can be placed on top of a round bottom flask to convert one opening into two, For example, attach one upper joint of the Claisen adapter to a condenser and one to an additional funnel or accept a thermometer adapter for temperature measurements in a distillation apparatus; This Claisen adapter has two upper outer joint to attach any lab glasswarer with inner joints, and a lower inner joint to entry into a boiling flask with outer joint. The sizes of the three joints are the same 24/40.
The 3 way distilling thermometer adapter has a compression cap to form a vacuum tight seal of plain thermometer on Top.
With 24/40 two inner joints at bottom and side,and the two joints are at a angle of 75 Degree .The bottom joint is usually connected to a distilling column for fractionation distillation or a distilling flask for the steam or vacuum distillation.The side joint may connect to a liebig or west condenser for water in and out when the temperature below 150 degree C,connect a air condenser if temperature above 150 degree C.

The “graham-style”condenser having the configuration that the jacket tube contains coolant,and condensation takes place inside the inner tube or coil includes Liebig condenser,Allihn condenser,West condenser,Graham condenser.
A graham condenser has a coolant-jacketed spiral coil running the length of the condenser serving as the vapor–condensate path.It consists of an inner spiral surrounded by an outer jacket tube.It maxmises collected condensate because all the vapors must flow through the entire length of the spiral,thereby having prolonged contact with the coolant.
Graham condenser also called Inland Revenue condenser,usually used in the downward distillation or vacuum evaporations , installed vertically to prevent liquid pooling in the tube. It is very similar to the coiled condenser but differentiated by an inverted coolant/vapor configuration(the coolant flows through the inner coil and the substance condenses inside the outer tube).
The liebig condenser is the most basic water-cooled condenser,also named “water conendenser”,which consists of an inner straight tube surrounded by an outer jacket tube,the cool water flows through the outer jacket to condensate the vapor in the inner tube.Water can asborb much more heat than the same volume of air,and its constant circulation through the water jacket keeps the condenser’s temperature constant,Therefore,a liebig condenser has a better cooling performance than an air condenser.
A liebig condenser can be both used in a reflux and a distillation apparatus.In the reflux apparatus, the lower inner joint will be inserted into a round bottom flask which contains the mixture liquid,the upper outer joint may attach a dry tube to prevent atmospheric moisture from entering a reaction system.
The Allihn condenser,also known as a “bulb condenser”,similar to a liebig condenser ,is designed with an inner tube consisting of a series of bulbs which increase the surface area availiable for vapor condensation surrounded by an outer jacket tube, the cool water flows through the outer jacket to condensate the vapor in the inner tube.Additionally,the Allihn condenser has a wider bore at the bottom and the condensed liquid can run down along the sides avoiding blocking the upward vapor.
Allihn condensers are used for laboratory-scale refluxing and provide a greater surface area than similar Liebig condensers.A reflux apparatus usually consists of an Allihn condenser used as a reflux condenser,a round bottom flask(single neck or multi-neck),a drying tube to prevent the atmospheric moisture from entering into the reaction,a separatory funnel or pressure equalizing funnel for adding reagents.

Answer:If you plan to heat your materials, you need to make sure that air and water are excluded from the system, and/or you want to make sure the joint does not freeze, then you must do so.
