Book SubtitleThe Continuity Of Man
Book DescriptionFrom 2010 to 2014, photographer Nick Hannes travelled the length and breadth of the Mediterranean shores, documenting various contemporary issues such as tourism, urbanisation and migration. While he was working on this project, the region continuously hit the headlines: crisis in Greece, the Arab Spring, boat refugees on Lampedusa, wars in Libya, Syria, and Gaza. One thing is for sure: the Mediterranean was centre stage once more. Nick Hannes' images capture the paradoxes of this region and the spirit of the time most significantly. They put things into perspective. Serious and moving in one moment, hilarious and ironic in the next.
About the AuthorNick Hannes (Belgium, b1974) graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (B) in 1997. After working as a freelance photo-journalist for ten years, he decided to fully concentrate on long term documentary projects about social-political issues. In 2009 he published the book Red Journey, a documentary about transition in the former Soviet Union. His second book, Tradities (2011), takes a closer look at traditions and party culture in Flanders. Mediterranean. The Continuity of Man, his third book, is the result of 4 years of intensive travelling along the Mediterranean shore. Since 2008, Hannes has taught documentary photography at The School of Arts (KASK) in Ghent. He exhibited at FotoMuseum (Antwerp), Bozar Centre for Fine Arts (Brussels), Flanders Center (Osaka), Cosmos Gallery (Paris), BredaPhoto (NL), Thessaloniki Biennial of Contemporary Art, Kaunas Photo (Lithuania). Hannes is represented by Cosmos in Paris.
