Book Description | The book “The Pursuit of Justice” provides a new introduction to the study of the history of the modern Egyptian state by tracing the developments witnessed in medicine and law in the nineteenth century. Drawing on the extensive records kept at the National Archives in Cairo, the book presents the methods that the Egyptian state introduced to control the bodies of its subjects, and the many methods that people used to circumvent those policies or to use them in the pursuit of justice. In its five chapters, the book deals with the stages of establishing the medical service and public health policies, including dissection, application of quarantine, and smallpox vaccination, and the methods by which Sharia was applied in Sharia courts and policy councils, city planning policies, and the role of the Hisbah in monitoring markets, in addition to the penal policy, including what it includes. From retribution, imprisonment and torture. By taking the human body as the unit of analysis, The Quest for Justice offers a comprehensive account of the way in which a distinct Egyptian modernity was established in the nineteenth century. |
