Book Description | At the turn of the century, new technologies began to grab our attention, and the power of software became clear: the Internet changed the way businesses operated, we saw dramatic advances in digital communication, and the emergence of digital platforms, and companies—particularly technology companies—began to see their world around them as ecosystems, rather than industries.
Observing these trends, I began to wonder: What would a competitive strategy based on ecosystems rather than industries look like? The ideas were vague at the time, but the desire and goals were clear:
First, to develop new competitive strategy frameworks that would give ecosystems the same depth and rigor as the prevailing frameworks for industries.
Second, to make these frameworks relevant to the vast majority of industrial companies competing with value chain business models, not just new technology companies operating with platform-based business models.
Since I began this book, digital forces have continued to gain strength, with sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) now ubiquitous in the industrial world, and the power of data has become clear to all.
The shift from an industrial mindset to a digital mindset has never been more urgent, In other words, it's time for the future of competitive strategy.
This book lays the foundation for the future of competitive strategy; I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
