Site requirements/soil tolerance: Pears can tolerate heavy soils with poor drainage better than most trees. However, for deep, well-drained loam soils at pH 6-7, productivity is highest. The climatic conditions of pears are very similar to those of apples, but pears are more prone to blight, so they cannot tolerate wet spring. Pears require 900-1000 hours of cooling to break dormancy, although many Asian pears have lower cooling requirements. The cold resistance of pears is similar to or lower than that of apples and can withstand -10 to -20F. Pears bloom 1-3 weeks earlier than apples, so they are susceptible to frost damage in most areas. Cultivation: Pears need cross-pollination to produce fruit.
