Use of a compass string to observe a specific location or detail on a map;

 Read the magnetic direction with the lens from the front of the compass dial. Assuming you are watching a lighthouse and it is positioned at a 40 degree angle. Place the compass on the map so that the lighthouse is on the wire line on the compass and the NS needle is parallel to the magnetic north line on the map. Your location is on the dotted line.
