Compton has published a number of papers in professional journals and presented at numerous professional conferences. His research has focused primarily on optimal mental health, meditation, eastern psychology, and the dimensions of well-being. He is also the author of "An Introduction to Positive Psychology" (2005) and "Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness and Flourishing" (2nd edition) with Edward Hoffman (2013). He has studied primarily within the Zen Buddhist tradition, but has also studied yoga and tai chi chuan.
