Book Description | The idea of this book dates back to the last days of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and specifically to the spring and summer of 2001, when I first began to think about the topics of this book and its issues. I traveled to Kosovo in 1999 and worked in other troubled places in the post-2001 decade, such as Pakistan, India, Egypt and the southern Philippines. I often worked with Human Rights Watch, The Taliban were unique, and the experience, in one word, was provocative; it was the fetus that gave birth to this book. Much of this book focuses on the events I witnessed in 2001, and what I learned from my role as a staff member of Human Rights Watch on the long, terrible and continuous path it took in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. |
