The importance of personal development is considered and chapters are devoted to presenting a model of the different processes, examining issues of power and identity, and assessing how training courses currently approach and encourage personal development and how it might be evaluated. The book culminates in summarising the major themes, and offers suggestions for future developments. * In line with BPS accreditation criteria which identifies personal development as a core learning objective* Offers an historical overview of the clinical psychology profession* Includes the voices of service users and carers* Considers how personal development can be assessed* Also of interest to counselors, psychotherapists, and nurse therapists as well as clinical psychologists and related professions outside the UK
Editorial Review" The book is practical, full of ideas of how personal development might be enhanced. This approach would tempt anyone considering the topic to want to learn more about themselves. I would recommend this book to any clinical psychologist, practitioner or trainer, who is looking for ways to foster personal development, whether for themselves or for trainees ." Dr Gabrielle Syme, counsellor and psychotherapist, BACP Fellow " This is a 360 degree book . It is highly experiential, academic, research-based, up-to-date, literature savvy, personal, professional, anecdotal and very accessible . Personal development can no longer linger on the periphery of clinical psychology training - this book moves it centre stage. ... It's as relevant to all training in the Helping Professions as it is to clinical psychology training ." Dr Michael Carroll, Chartered Counselling Psychologist, BACP Senior Registered Practitioner and BACP Fellow " The book provides useful suggestions for how personal development can be addressed in training and beyond. A particular strength is that it brings together a range of perspectives including not only trainers and supervisors but trainees and mental health service users too ." Dr David Harper, University of East London "T his a well timed and significant book . It reminds us of the importance of the human selves in the psychotherapeutic relationship. I warmly commend this book ." Professor Peter Kinderman, University of Liverpool
