Book Description | Western interest in the Qatar Peninsula goes back to the early days of the Portuguese’s arrival in the waters of the Arabian Gulf, as some sources indicate an order received by the Portuguese commander Dom Goncalo de Silveira, commander of the Portuguese fleet in the Arabian Gulf region, for his fleet to head to the Qatari coast, as he ordered the bombing of Qatari cities on the coast. Along the coast in the period from September 1627 until April 28, 1628, he burned some villages on the coast of Qatar with a fleet of six ships, and destroyed what he saw of the local ships anchored in those ports, and all the urban habitats on the coast. Another Portuguese document also indicates that Balastar de Sousa de Menz, the Portuguese officer assigned to provide his services in support of the Pasha of Qatif, participated from 1626 to April 1630 in the destruction of a number of villages that were located on the Qatari coast. European sources had crystallized a clear idea of the Qatar Peninsula since the beginning of the sixteenth century, although it had begun to appear in marine drawings as more of a city than a province. |
