Book Description | Violence against women with disabilities has received far greater recognition and attention by United Nations as the most widespread human rights abuse in the world. The international community has committed itself to protecting the rights and dignity of women with disabilities through a range of treaties and declarations. Despite the increased attention to the rights of women with disabilities, there has been little progress in reducing violence against them. This book concludes that violence against women with disabilities is rooted in a culture of silence, denial and apathy, and comes with legal, social, cultural, economic and psychological dimensions and costs. Thus, violence against women with disabilities has yet to receive the priority attention and resources needed at all levels to tackle it with the gravity and visibility required. The book also provides evidence and recommendations that will assist governments, intergovernmental institutions and civil society in addressing and in redressing this global injustice. |
