As a result, we have almost no record of the decade in which she made her most influential mark on science when she discovered eight comets and became the first woman to have a paper read at the Royal Society. Here, for the first time, historian Dr Emily Winterburn looks deep into Carolines life and wonders why, in the year following the marriage of her brother and constant companion, Caroline wanted no record of her life to remain. Was she consumed with grief and jealousy? By piecing together from letters, reminiscences and museum objects a detailed account of that time, we get to see a new side to historys most admirable lady astronomer and one of the greatest pioneering female scientists of all time. |
| عن المؤلف | Emily Winterburn holds a BSc in Physics and an MSc in History of Science from the University of Manchester. She completed her PhD in history of science from Imperial College, London and was most recently visiting fellow at the University of Leeds. Between 1998 and 2007 she worked at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Emily has written extensively for commercial audiences with two trade books The Astronomers Royal (NMM publishing, 2003) and The Stargazers Guide (Constable, 2008). She has spoken at conferences around the world and given public lectures on a variety of topics, including the Herschels. |
