The next day, more than 200,000 workers went on strike, and demonstrators went out in marches, throwing stones at the police. On February 26, soldiers received orders to shoot crowds of demonstrators, and the next morning several military units rebelled. By March 1, 170,000 soldiers had gathered, attacking prisons and police stations, and destroying symbols of tsarist slavery that had only lasted 12 days in the face of the revolution.
