Book DescriptionA generous presentation in this realistic novel details the conditions in the Chechen Republic, from the first hours of the Russian forces' invasion in 1994 to the present day. The author, a journalist and field reporter, made her first visit there at that very time, with subsequent visits occurring according to the tense situations and ongoing events the country has witnessed, ultimately leading to the writing of this novel filled with vivid images and details reflecting the Chechen tragedy in all its aspects of violent warfrom destruction and devastation to thousands of dead and many wounded, as well as the displaced, lost orphans, the majority of whom are children. "After one week, I find myself lying in one of the trenches. Bullets tear through the branches of the trees above us, scraping the surface of the slope, causing a shower of stones and grass to fall." "All the while, I kept thinking about water and believed I wouldnt be able to crawl any further unless I had something to drink." The author recorded her experiences of the war in Chechnya in her unique and impactful narrative style, capturing her live field observations, as well as the interviews she conducted with various families and officials there, including a lengthy meeting with the Chechen president "Ramzan," who represents the moderate Muslim current of the state in confronting an extremist Islamic current close to Osama bin Ladens group. She also recounted how she relentlessly and courageously continued to seek the truth about the situation in Chechnya through living among the people and writing their stories that narrate, reflect, or expose reality. In this context, she shares the story of her meeting with "Khadija," who grew up in a Soviet orphanage in Grozny and who now helps war orphan victims by opening her home and those of her friends to shelter and feed them, providing them with a temporary opportunity to live in a family atmosphere, as their actual future remains uncertain amid poverty, war, and the difficult conditions of the country. The reader gets to know through this novel that highlights human empathy and the value of humanitarian concepts that have taken root in the darkness of discouraging political conditions, along with their interaction with the numerous touching stories it contains and the various events that shape its content, the intricacies and features of an Islamic country in contrast to its belonging to contemporary Russia, amid its struggles, wars, and ongoing turmoil.
