Book Description | "Between the Two Palaces" is the first part of Naguib Mahfouz's trilogy, in which he combined political and social history, through narrating the life of a middle-class Egyptian family; the family of "Sayyid Ahmed Abdel Gawad", starting from the end of the second decade of the twentieth century until the mid-forties, and he began to highlight the psychological and social dimensions of each character with unique skill. The events of the trilogy take place in the Gamaleya neighborhood, which this part was named after one of its streets, "Between the Two Palaces" Street. In this part, "Mahfouz" narrates the daily life of the family, the harmonious contradictions that were formed by social circumstances and nourished by the psychological makeup, and the role played by each character, especially the character of "Sayyid Ahmed Abdel Gawad", which is difficult to classify; due to the many contradictions it contains. The events of the novel begin with a calm rhythm that gradually rises until it reaches its peak with the events of the 1919 Revolution and the martyrdom of Fahmy, the second son of the family. |
