OverviewWhat is block printing? At OJARIYA, all our products are created by artisans using traditional methods, these important art forms have been passed down from generations. Block Printing is an ancient printing technique that utilizes a hand-carved teak wood block that is dipped in natural vegetable dye and stamped by hand onto cotton or silk. A process that requires steady movement and careful hand-eye coordination. The result is truly unique, hand-block printed fabric that connects us to a rich tradition and history of handmade crafts. India is known for its intricate hand block-prints. Most of the hand-block printing takes place in the areas of Bagru, Ahmedabad, Pethapur, Farukhabad, and Sanganer. These areas are part of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Which colours are used for block printing? The traditional block printing process involves mixing together natural dyes, which may be plant-based or vegetable-based. Once the fabric is printed, the craftsman scatters some fine sawdust onto the wet dye to prevent smudging off the design. The printed fabric is sun-dried for a significant amount of time so that the colours look brighter and lively. The traditional colours used for block printing are red, black, brown, mustard and orange. How long does it take to create a piece of the wooden block? The process of designing and creating a wooden block can take 9 to 12 days, depending on the complexity of the design.
