Book DescriptionCigar Box Lithographs: Volume IV, written and compiled by Charles J. A. Humber, the fourth in a series showcases the author's longtime passion for tobacco-related collectibles. Like the previous volumes, this beautifully illustrated book is a historical window into the world of cigar box ephemera. In the newest edition, Humber starts off in his signature style, with a deep dive into a rare collectible. In this case, it's a cigar box, the inside cover emblazoned with the beloved Bard. Humber delves into the cigar box's provenance (New York), then quickly shifts to Shakespeare's enduring cachet, speaking about his plays, sonnets, and Ontario's famous Stratford Festival. Also similar to its precursors, in Volume IV readers are once again treated to Humber's chatty, erudite writing style; reading it no doubt makes Cigar Box Lithographs fans feel like they're sitting down with a treasured friend enjoying a long and fascinating conversation.
About the AuthorCharles J. Humber, born, Montreal, Quebec, 1936. He graduated, B.A., 1962, from Temple University, Philadelphia. As an undergraduate, he also attended the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, 1960-61. He pursued graduate work at the University of Toronto, studying under the legendary H. Northrop Frye before attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating with his M.A., 1970. After twenty years as a high school teacher, Charlie ventured into the world of publishing. His first book, Loyal She Remains, sold 50,000 copies in 1984 and was chosen by the Ontario government as the official gift to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Holiness Pope John Paul II when both these dignitaries visited Ontario, the trillium province, as it celebrated its 1984 Bicentennial. Since1984, Charles J. Humber has edited or written fifteen books including the seven-volume CANADA Heirloom Series (1986-2000). Charles and Gayle Jenkins, his California-born wife, were married just shy of sixty years when Gay passed away in March, 2020. They became the proud parents of Kristan Laura, Karyn Anna, and twins Charles William and Scott Nicholas. In due course, they became the grandparents of eight grandchildren as illustrated on page 4 of this Volume IV of the Cigar Box Lithographs series. Charles and Gayle made Mississauga, Ontario, their home base, on and off, since 1962.
