Book SubtitleThe Role of the Container in the Supply Chain
Book DescriptionWhilst the maritime container business has been studied in depth, the impact on shippers and how shippers deal with the given challenges has not been fully examined. Container Logistics bridges this gap and looks at the maritime business from a customer's perspective. The book examines the challenges, solutions and the latest developments in the container industry as well as the interaction between the different actors involved, such as freight forwarders, supply chain managers and shippers. Current hot topics from the supply chain and the maritime business perspective are included. From the supply chain perspective, Container Logistics covers areas such as the purchase of transportation services from ocean carriers and transport management, to effective and efficient logistics execution. From the maritime business perspective, the book covers topics such as intermodal freight optimisation and hinterland transportation, and terminal and port optimisation. With the inclusion of clear examples of best practice and bona fide case studies, as well as invaluable contributions from an international team of experts, Container Logistics is an essential guide for supply chain managers and shippers, as well as academics and industry professionals working in the maritime business. Online supporting resources include images from the book and chapter summaries.
Editorial ReviewReal-world cases and academic frameworks providing food for thought for the experienced shipping professional.--Peter Sand, Chief Shipping Analyst, BIMCO "Managing logistics is an art and, as Rolf Neise points out in his book, it's not without its challenges."--Jesper Kjaedegaard, Partner, Mercator International; formerly Global Head, Maersk Line, and CEO, the Maersk Company "This is a landmark publication - there are few people in the supply chain industry better placed than Rolf Neise to pick apart the intricate web that connects customers, carriers and logistics service providers. His insight is accompanied by a world-class team of industry experts writing on some fascinating topics."--Gavin van Marle, Managing Editor, The Loadstar "Shipping lines, logistics service providers, ports and beneficial cargo owners - they all need to know about containers and how they impact business. This book provides the answers. Neise charts the history of containerization, explains current challenges and opportunities, and looks at how technology, higher-quality data and value concepts will change its future."--John Fossey, Maritime Transport Consultant, Moffatt and Nichol, and Contributing Editor, World Cargo News "The timing of this book is spot on. I am convinced that this book can contribute to the dialogue that is needed between all parties in the maritime supply chain."--Nik Delmeire, Secretary General, European Shippers' Council "It is important to take into account the interest of all stakeholders in the chain, particularly shippers and cargo owners, and their view is clarified in this book. This fills a gap in the literature."--Jens Meier, CEO, Hamburg Port Authorities
