ABOUT:

Horten Ho-IX (often misnamed Gotha Go 229 or Ho 229), II. Prototype flying wing aircraft developed by Germany towards the end of World War II. It was designed as a fighter-bomber aircraft. It was the favorite aircraft of Luftwaffe chief Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. It is the only aircraft capable of meeting Göring's famous performance expectations. In the early 1930s, the Horten brothers became interested in flying wing design as a method of improving the performance of gliders. The German government was funding glider clubs at the time because the production of military and even powered aircraft was banned by the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. The flying wing layout eliminated the need for a tail and associated control surfaces and theoretically offered the lowest possible weight using relatively short and sturdy wings and without additional fuselage drag. The result was the Horten H.IV. In 1943, Reichsmarschall Göring issued a request for design proposals to produce a bomber capable of carrying a payload of 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb) over 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) at a speed of 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) per hour; the so-called "3×1000 project". Conventional German bombers were able to reach Allied command centers in Great Britain, but were suffering devastating losses from Allied fighters. There was no way to achieve these goals at that time - the new Junkers Jumo 004 B turbojets could provide the required speed, but had excessive fuel consumption.
