Book Description | Riverine floodplains are usually classified by the character of the rivers which shape them. But the connectivity between channelized rivers and their floodplains is lost and floodplains are unable to function as links between the catchment and the channel. Rehabilitation efforts are needed and have to be founded by detailed surveys of both baseline and target conditions. Using various methods, the true extension and distinct segments of the morphological floodplain of a Hungarian river are established. Neotectonic influences are pointed out. Then hydromorphological studies are directed to the reconstruction of paleochannels, the impact of flood waves on groundwater levels, flood hazard and possible water retention in the floodplain. The distribution of soil types is considered important background information. Geoecological research focuses on landscape patterns, links between the floodplain and the neighbouring hillslopes and ecologically feasible potential land-use options. This is a useful handbook for experts in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, landscape planning, nature conservation as well as students of these subjects. |
