Book Description | This novel is inspired by the art of mosaics as a theme and structure. The novel takes place in the city of Volubilis, an archaeological Roman site, and consists of three included manuscripts (two novels and a memoir). The events of the first novel ("The Moorish Boy") take place during the Roman occupation of Morocco (second century AD), when a mosaic was made that spoke in the voice of the Moors (the indigenous people) who opposed the Roman invasion of their land. As for the second included novel, its events take place between 1994 and 1996, and in it the American writer Ariadna Noel embarks on a journey in search of a lost mosaic, guided by her compatriot Lina, the widow of a Moroccan husband and the owner of a house in which one of the rooms contains part of the mosaic stolen from the archaeological site of Volubilis. Upon her arrival, a love affair develops between her and Jawad, the writer of the manuscript of "The Moorish Boy", and she begins writing the story of her search and her relationship with Jawad in her novel "The Nights of Volubilis". The third manuscript is a memoir written by psychiatrist Nawal El Hindawi about her patients, Tahami Ismaili and Ayash El Hafyan. The latter was wrongly accused of stealing the expensive statue of Bacchus from the archaeological site of Volubilis and was imprisoned for ten years. These manuscripts connect the distant past to the recent present, intertwining to create a historical fantasy, psychological realism, and novel that raises questions about freedom, memory, writing, and love. |
