Book DescriptionTwo empires battle each other; war, slavery, contraband; strategic power and control in the Caribbean; a war that is fought on the high seas. After the end of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1713, English merchants had a monopoly in the supply of black slaves to the Spanish colonies in South America. One day, Jenkins, a smuggler who called himself a merchant, revolts against the control of the Spanish coastguards in Caribbean waters and the Spanish captain cuts his left ear off without any trepidation. Jenkins hastily returned to London to bare proof of such an insult. For the English court, the severed ear of the captain of one of its ships, becomes reason enough to send an immense brigade of ships and unleash a war in the Caribbean. In one of the British ships, Tobias Smollett, a young doctor, joins in the search for the long-sought-after treasure of emeralds that his Empire was coveting.
