Book DescriptionThe nature of people's moral lives, the similarities and differences in the moral concepts of individuals and groups, and how these concepts emerge in the course of human development are topics of perennial interest. In recent years, the field of moral development has turned from a focus on a limited set of theories to a refreshingly vast array of research questions and methods. This handbook offers a comprehensive, international, and up-to-date review of this research on moral development. Drawing together the work of over 90 authors, hailing from diverse disciplines such as anthropology, education, human development, psychology and sociology, the handbook reflects the dynamic nature of the field. Across more than 40 chapters, this handbook opens the door to a broad view of moral motives and behaviors, ontogeny and developmental pathways, and contexts that children, adolescents, and adults experience with respect to morality. It offers a comprehensive and timely tour of the field of moral development.
About the AuthorLene Arnett Jensen is Senior Research Scientist at Clark University. Together with colleagues, she has conducted research on moral development and identity in countries such as Denmark, India, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States. Her "cultural-developmental" theoretical approach conceptualizes the lifespan in terms of flexible developmental templates that accommodate cultural diversity. Her recent and forthcoming publications include Child Development: A Cultural Approach, Third Edition (forthcoming, Pearson), Human Development: A Cultural Approach, Third Edition (2019, Pearson), Child Development Worldwide: A Cultural Approach (2018, Pearson), Oxford Handbook of Human Development and Culture (2016, Oxford University Press), Moral Development in a Global World (2015, Cambridge University Press), and Bridging Cultural and Developmental Psychology (2011, Oxford University Press). From 2004 to 2015, she was editor-in-chief for the journal New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. In recent years, she has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Aalborg University in Denmark, Maharaja Sayajirao University in India, and the University of Bordeaux in France. Read more
