| Book Description | This completely revised, extended and updated second edition of the Variant Dictionary of German is the result of a large, trinational research project and was developed at three independent jobs in Germany (University of Duisburg-Essen), Austria (University of Vienna) and Switzerland (University of Basel) , in collaboration with experts from other countries. Overall, a team of over 40 scientists participated in the new edition. The three "full centers" of the German language Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as the four "semi-centers" Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, South Tyrol and East Belgium are supplemented in the second edition by entries to the "Viertelzentren": the German language areas in Romania, Namibia and the Mennonite settlements in Mexico. In addition to the national structure of the standard German, the dictionary also takes full account of its areal (regional) differentiation. For all centers of the German language not only numerous additions have been added to the first edition, but also corrections due to linguistic change. The present edition thus provides a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of the national and regional diversity of standard German. It contains approx. 12,000 standard-language words and phrases with national or regional distribution or differences in usage as well as their German-English equivalents. |
